For non-EU professionals drawn to Sweden’s innovation and work-life balance, Visa Sponsorship is the essential legal mechanism for employment. Unlike a personal application, the process in Sweden is entirely employer-initiated. A Swedish company must offer you a job and then apply for a work permit on your behalf through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).
This sponsorship confirms that the employment terms match Swedish collective agreements and that the position was advertised to EU citizens first (usually for at least 10 days). Securing this support is the only way to obtain the right to live and work in the country, as self-sponsorship for regular employment is not an option.
The type of permit depends largely on your income and role. For a General Work Permit, a major policy shift in June 2025 raised the maintenance requirement. You must now earn at least 80% of the median salary, which is approximately SEK 29,680 per month (up from the old SEK 13,000 threshold).
For highly skilled professionals, the EU Blue Card is the premium option. As of 2025, the salary threshold for this card is set at 1.25 times the average gross salary (approx. SEK 52,000 per month). This route offers faster processing and easier mobility within the EU. Intra-corporate transfers (ICT) are also available for staff moving within multinational firms.

The application process is digital but requires coordination. Once you sign the contract, your employer initiates the request. You will then receive an email to provide your details. A critical step often missed is the opinion from the relevant Trade Union (Facket), which the employer must obtain before submitting.
Upon arrival, your first priority is registering with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to get your Personnummer (Personal Identity Number). This number is vital for everything from healthcare to opening a bank account.
As of June 2025, the general work permit requires a monthly salary of at least SEK 29,680 to meet the “good living” maintenance requirement. This figure is updated annually based on national median wage statistics.
Generally, you must apply for your permit from outside Sweden. However, if you are a qualified researcher or a recent graduate of a recognized university, you may apply for a special residence permit to look for work for up to 9 months.
For many IT and engineering roles, English is the working language. However, for regulated professions like medicine or nursing, you must prove Swedish proficiency to obtain your professional license (legitimation).
