Singapore operates one of the most structured and efficient immigration systems in Asia, managed entirely by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). Unlike many Western countries where you can self-petition, Visa Sponsorship in Singapore is strictly employer-driven. This means a Singapore-registered company must apply for your work pass on your behalf; you cannot initiate this application yourself.

The system is designed to balance local employment with the need for global talent. For foreign professionals, securing a job offer is the absolute first step. Once hired, your employer becomes your sponsor, handling the administrative burden of the application, including proving that the role could not be filled by a local candidate under the Fair Consideration Framework.

Key Work Passes and 2025 Salary Updates

The type of pass you qualify for depends on your salary and skills. The Employment Pass (EP) is for professionals and executives. As of January 1, 2025, the minimum qualifying salary for new EP applications has risen to SGD 5,600 per month (and SGD 6,200 for the financial services sector).

For mid-level skilled staff, the S Pass is the appropriate route. The minimum salary is currently SGD 3,150, but it is set to increase to SGD 3,300 starting September 1, 2025. Unlike the EP, the S Pass is subject to a quota system, meaning companies are limited in how many S Pass holders they can hire based on their total workforce size.

The application process is digital and fast. Your employer submits the request via EP Online. If approved, you receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter, which acts as a single-entry visa to enter Singapore. Upon arrival, you must undergo a medical examination and register your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) to receive your physical card.

Once settled, you enjoy a low-tax environment and world-class infrastructure. While work passes are temporary (typically issued for 1-2 years initially), holding a valid pass is a necessary prerequisite for applying for Permanent Residency (PR) in the future.

Can I apply for a work visa myself?
  • No. In Singapore, all work passes (EP, S Pass, Work Permit) must be applied for by the employer or an appointed employment agent. You cannot submit an application as an individual.

  • Effective January 1, 2025, the minimum qualifying salary for new EP applicants is SGD 5,600 per month. This threshold is higher for older, more experienced candidates and for those in the Financial Services sector (starting at SGD 6,200).

  • Yes, if you hold an Employment Pass or S Pass and earn a fixed monthly salary of at least SGD 6,000. You can bring your legally married spouse and unmarried children under 21 on a Dependant’s Pass.
